Where the run starts

In a consulting room on the day of a first appointment, Tessa has booked a session to repair what she sees as a problem in her partner Jake. Jake sits beside her, embarrassed and half convinced the whole thing is his fault. Margot Vey, the therapist, is poised, direct and in no hurry. She wants honest answers about who starts what at home and how often, and she wants to watch for herself. Jake wants to get through the hour, Tessa wants results, and neither expects the appointment to run on Margot's terms.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, her questions have turned into instructions: both clients stand when told to, Tessa admits what she is feeling, and Margot asks for a one-on-one with Jake straight away rather than on Thursday. Two episodes in, that private session takes place with Tessa waiting just outside. Margot tells Jake to relax and not look toward the door, calls it an exercise, and says Tessa should learn it too. Before the second episode ends, Tessa is called in.
