Where the run starts

On a summer afternoon at a backyard grill, Jake's father presents his new wife, Mia, and asks the two to get acquainted. Jake is an adult stepson who knows her face at once from the front row of his best friend Tyler's bachelor party in Las Vegas, where she danced under a different name. Mia wants him quiet and will do nearly anything to get it. Jake wants an explanation, and he alone at the table knows there is anything to explain.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, she has stopped pretending she does not know him, and she names the cherry tattoo he remembers. Tyler calls to ask how the stepmother is, and Jake hides his answer. Mia offers one final private performance at twelve, downstairs, and Jake agrees. Two episodes in, the offer has been taken up, with his father in the shower and ten minutes to spare, before Mia leads him toward the private room.
