Where the run starts

On a weekend at the family home, Josie is dealing with the sudden end of her marriage: her husband has left her for another woman after years in which, she says, he hardly looked at her. Tyler, her adult stepson, arrives to keep her company and to talk about what happened. Josie, who has spent twelve years of mornings at yoga, asks him directly whether she looks old to him. He answers with the politeness of someone who has been looking at her for a long time and is not willing to say so.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, Josie has asked him to stay through the weekend because she dreads the empty bed, and a moment of closeness has already left Tyler admitting the situation is wrong. Two episodes in, she is describing years of marriage spent turned away from her, while a message asking where Tyler is goes unanswered. Halfway through the second episode, she says he has stared at her across three summers and that being polite is over.
