Where the run starts

By the end of a third month without paying, Jake, an unemployed tenant with no savings, receives a notice that he must leave by Friday. His landlady, Vanessa, offers an arrangement in place of money: she will let him stay, and he will pay another way. Jake, cornered, accepts. He wants to keep his apartment and keep it quiet. Vanessa wants an obedient tenant on a fixed schedule, same time next week. Then her daughter Mia appears, introduces herself and works out what the rent has really been. An eviction notice, a lease and a front door are the pieces on the board.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, one month of debt is cleared, and Mia has caught on and offered her silence in exchange for the same deal. Two episodes in, Mia is the one setting the terms: she says it is her turn, tells Jake that two women are now collecting from him and warns him not to make her share. When he points out that her mother is downstairs, she answers that they had better be quiet.
