Where the run starts

On the afternoon of a third failed test, Jake needs just one pass to keep the scholarship that pays for his life. He is broke, anxious and distracted, and Professor Vaughn tells him she has noticed why. She tells him to visit her office once the day winds down. Her offer is private: there is another way to earn what he needs, and no one at the university has to know. Jake wants to keep his funding and his integrity. Vaughn wants him. Maya, his girlfriend, tops the same course.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, Jake has been left with one line to hold: the door is locked, and the move is his. Halfway through the second, he refuses, citing his girlfriend, and Vaughn replies that her offer stays open and that he will return. Meanwhile Maya celebrates another top score, tells him he is smarter than he thinks and proposes working through the material together. As they sit side by side, his mind drifts back to the office.
