Where the run starts

At a family dinner, a wife named Kate declares such faith in her husband Dan that she would let him use a hall pass, certain he never would. The table laughs, though not her mother, Margot, who has a different plan for the evening. Ten minutes later she steps into the kitchen and asks Dan point blank whether he would use the pass if it were offered, and he says no, very quickly. Dan, a man who wants to stay the husband his wife describes, has coffee to make. Margot, composed and amused, notes that book club meets tomorrow from seven to ten.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, the refusal still stands, but his pulse and the heat of the kitchen suggest it is costing him more. Halfway through the second, Dan stands in Margot's room fixing a buckle at her request while she asks him to repeat his no for the pleasure of hearing it. A phone call from Kate breaks in and he answers calmly. Then Margot asks him to unzip her.
