Where the run starts

In a house where a father has left for two weeks, a woman with a broken leg depends on her adult stepson for nearly everything. She cannot reach her dress, work a zipper or climb into bed alone, and an appointment is waiting. He is a grown man who wants to be useful and keep the house calm. She wants her independence back and, little by little, wants his help to extend past what a stepmother should ask. The father phones from the road, grateful that someone is there.

By the close of the first episode, her dependence has become a routine of zippers and evening help, and a remark about danger from her has registered with him. The father thanks his son by phone and asks him to go on helping. Two episodes in, the nightly request has turned into asking him to help her lie down beside him on the father's side of the bed. She asks, with a half smile, whether he plans to behave.
