Where the run starts

Inside a castle at night, a dragon queen chooses her next companion from among her prisoners. Ethan is human, an outsider with no rank and no leverage, and he knows that her previous lovers have not been seen again. Veyra is imperious, used to getting what she asks for, and careful to keep any sign of softness behind the walls of her chamber. He wants to survive without being broken by her. She wants to see whether he will give way as the others did, and she orders him to say her name.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, the night ends with her command and his compliance, and a warning that humans break easily. Two episodes in, a member of her court dismisses him as a peasant in public, and the queen answers with a threat to burn that person's house down with the family inside. Later in private, she tells him that he is hers in public as well, but only in private does she let him feel it.
