Where the run starts

On the weekend of a twenty-first birthday, a family house fills with parents, a cake and an adult stepbrother back for a visit. Alma has just turned twenty-one, is delighted about it and says so repeatedly, to her parents' mild exasperation. The two stepsiblings must share a bathroom, and the parents' only instruction is to keep doors closed. Alma wants to be treated as the grown woman she now is, and she has made a list. He wants a quiet visit and has no idea that he is the first entry.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, she has asked her stepbrother to help with the candles later, pressed against him within earshot of the household, and told him that her list begins with his name. Two episodes in, the house is still awake. Halfway through the second, the parents are just down the hall and she asks him to unzip her. He hesitates, reminds her they are family by marriage, and she asks whether he is afraid or something else.
