Where the run starts

On a deserted desert road, an ordinary man driving a battered truck pulls over for a hitchhiker far more striking than anyone who usually rides with him. She checks that he is not a killer, accepts his answer, and explains that she abandoned a boyfriend, or rather an ex, at a fuel stop miles behind them. He is going home, two hundred miles away; she is going wherever he is. She is overheated, asks for a shower, and learns the nearest motel is forty miles off, where he was planning to stop anyway, with a single room left.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, the two have reached the motel and agreed, a little awkwardly, to share the one room, with her reassuring him that she does not bite. Two episodes in, the room is not what anyone would call luxurious, he is teased about whether he has brought a woman to a motel before, and she takes a shower. A phone call to her ex ends things for good. Halfway through the second episode, she asks him for a towel and tells him to come closer.
