Where the run starts

Over a hot weekend, Jake agrees to look after a friend's house, expecting Tyler to be around, then arrives to find the owner's mother, Vanessa, newly divorced, waiting instead. Tyler is not coming home. Jake is broke, polite and nervous, with a habit of saying yes when he should say no. Vanessa is warm and confident, wants company in an empty house, and asks him for help with something she cannot reach. When Tyler phones to check in, Jake lies calmly, and the situation gets more complicated when Vanessa's friend Dana arrives at the open gate and takes in the scene at once.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, Dana has seen enough to understand and promises to keep the secret for now. Two episodes in, she wants a turn herself. Vanessa objects that Jake is no toy, and the two women argue over who has a claim on him while he stands between them. By nightfall, a lock is turned, and the conversation shifts from rivalry to something quieter.
