Where the run starts

In a royal court at the end of a ten-year war, an old king marries a new queen and orders his son to kneel and kiss her hand as his new mother. The court laughs while he does it. The queen, Aubrey Vaughn, looks at him as if the joke is shared. That night, with the king asleep from drink and her maids' loyalties easily bought, she finds her way into the wrong wing of the castle, asks the son to do what her maids usually do, and tells him she is fully aware of whose wife she is.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, he has found the enemy's mark on her shoulder, and she dares him either to run and tell his father or to finish what he started. Two episodes in, he has told no one and has waited an hour at the king's door. She names her family, her brother and his army two days away, and her plan to open the north gate. When riders appear on the north road early, she gives him a choice of sides.
