Where the run starts

On a Friday evening, a father heads off to fish, instructing his wife Riley to make sure his son does not spend the whole visit buried in work. The son, a grown man home for just two days, is quiet and unsure how to act around his stepmother. Riley Reid is relaxed, observant, and unbothered by the fact that her husband rarely looks at her with any interest. She wants company, a film for the night, and someone who actually notices her. He wants to get through the weekend without saying anything he cannot take back.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, she has caught him looking, told him she does not mind, and set up the movie night. Halfway through the second, his father phones to check on them, and the two answer in cheerful, double-edged terms while sitting very close together. Later she turns bedtime into a joke about improvising a story, offers him a clear way to say stop, and he does not take it.
