Where the run starts

At a coastal rental booked around a birthday weekend, Ryan arrives with his girlfriend Chloe and is greeted at the door by the host, who turns out to be Riley Reid. Before the keys change hands, she walks them through a short list of house rules: no photos, shoes off at the entrance, and every guest rinses off in the outdoor shower. Chloe is looking forward to a birthday dinner and heads upstairs to get ready. Ryan is left on the ground floor with a host who is amused by him, and who treats her own list as something to be added to.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, a fourth rule has been announced, and Ryan, with his girlfriend only a floor above, understands that the host does not intend to leave the list unused. Two episodes in, Riley brings Chloe a towel herself and is perfectly gracious, while Ryan is still within reach. Halfway through the second episode, Chloe calls out that dinner is ten minutes away, and Riley bargains it down to five. The birthday plans keep ticking in the background.
