Where the run starts

On a morning when Riley has trouble getting her boyfriend Jack out of bed, the couple prepares to see her stepmother for the first time in two years. Riley is excited and talkative, determined to show him off, and keen to tell the story of her busy life and how good he has been to her. Jack is nervous about the visit and wants to make a good impression. Regina greets Riley warmly, then studies Jack and remarks that she had not expected him to be so handsome. Regina is poised, charming, and used to getting a reaction when she wants one. She suggests that everyone dance.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, the dance floor has done its job, and Regina has taken in the boyfriend's strong build while Riley keeps talking. Two episodes in, a spilled drink gives her a reason to ask Jack for help, and he hesitates over what she is really asking. An unexpected arrival interrupts them, and the scene breaks off with Riley's confusion hanging in the air.
