Where the run starts

On the final night of her probation at a hospital, Harriet works a quiet overnight shift on a floor that goes still once the operating rooms close. She is nervous and awkward, her scrubs fit tighter than she would like, and the head nurse, Vanessa, has made it known she hopes to see Harriet dismissed. The chief of surgery has been watching her, and Harriet cannot tell whether it is a compliment or a test. Harriet wants to last until morning. The chief wants the on-call room to himself and asks that no one disturb them.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, he has locked the door and told Vanessa to keep everyone away, and Harriet is asking him to stop in a voice that says otherwise. Two episodes in, she apologizes for swearing at the chief on her last night, and he tells her that he likes it. Halfway through the second, Vanessa knocks on the door and asks if the chief is still in there.
