Where the run starts

In a castle where laying a hand on the sovereign carries a death sentence, a stable hand named Kale is promoted into the Queensguard and told he will be back mucking stalls by nightfall. The queen overrules the doubters. She is a grown woman, sharp and amused, and she picks him because he alone dares to hold her gaze. Kale wants to keep his post and his neck. The queen wants a guard who is watching her, and she assigns him to her bedchamber starting tonight, noting that the law forbids his touch and says nothing about hers.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, Kale stands guard with his heart pounding, and she tells him that tonight he is hers. Two episodes in, she has him bar the door and carry her crown carefully, since a dropped crown would be treason, and makes him say aloud that he cannot touch her. Halfway through the second, she explains what the law really protects, and mentions that tomorrow the court chooses her husband.
