Where the run starts

In the war camps along an Egyptian river, Julius Caesar commands Roman forces while Queen Cleopatra's army presses closer. He is the lion of Rome, a married man determined not to yield any ground. Cleopatra wants her throne secure and her country free of Roman rule, and she is willing to use her presence as a weapon. Caesar wants to win and return to his wife in Rome with his reputation intact. A war table, a camp overrun and a kneeling queen are the images that define the opening.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, Cleopatra has tested his resolve in person, Caesar has told her to cease, citing his wife, and an urgent report that the eastern camp has fallen forces him back to duty. Two episodes in, the armies have clashed again, and she meets him in private. He accuses her of tricks. She says she is on her knees for the conqueror and means to conquer him. Then she says she is expecting his baby, a fact she learned that morning.
