Where the run starts

During the seven days of the Harvest Court, a king whose marriage is purely political is sent a new servant to help him dress each morning. The queen has chosen the woman herself, from the kitchens, and has chosen the prettiest. The king notices that this servant treats him with unusual ease. When a courtier moves to punish her for a clumsy moment, the king stops him sharply, an act of protection that no one in the castle has ever extended to her, and the court is left waiting on its king.

Episodes 1 and 2

By the close of the first episode, the king has told her to turn his bed down at midnight, with an invitation attached, and the servant has accepted. Two episodes in, she arrives early and admits she has followed him with her eyes since the previous harvest, since he alone thanks servants. She tells him she can leave or stay, and the choice is his. Halfway through the second episode, the queen comes to the bedchamber door, finds it locked, and the king tells her he sleeps alone tonight.
